New Haven Overture was commissioned in honor of Carl Bounds and his many years of service as band director at New Haven High School in New Haven, Missouri. The opening theme is loosely based on their school song, “The Wearing of the Green”, an Irish folksong dating back to the late 1700’s. The second main section of the composition states “The Wearing of the Green” in its entirety, and both themes come together for the finale.
